Really, what needs to be said here? The Indiana Jones series of movies are one of the most fun, energetic, and enjoyable series of movies I’ve ever seen. This collection includes re-mastered DVD versions of Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. A bonus disc is also included showing special effects and other behind-the-scene goodies.
The video and sound re-mastering is a welcome improvement to the DVD versions over the VHS. The picture is crisp and the sound is stunning. For comparison, I went to a midnight “old movie” showing of the Indiana Jones series at a local theatre, where they used the original film reels, and I’ll just say that the years were not kind to the visual or audio portions of the old film. These DVDs, in comparison, are like stepping-up to an Mercedes S500 from a Ford Fiesta. Of course, watching on my new Sony KDFE42A10 TV over the 12+ year old CRT TV helps as well!
After watching all three movies, my feelings were reinforced that ToD is my least favorite of the series. There are definitely some classic scenes, such as the mine-car ride, but overall, I found the other two films much more enjoyable from a story and casting perspective.
Anyway, this boxed-set is something everyone who enjoys tongue-in-cheek action movies should own in my opinion. We’re still waiting for Indy 4 and as more years pass-by, I’m unsure how they will handle the story since Harrison Ford isn’t exactly looking very young these days. Still, as long as they don’t take a shit on a piece of film and call it a movie (cough Aliens 4 cough) I’m hopeful that number four will be in the same league as the first three.
